Where vocab practice breaks down

Daily review without consistent reinforcement, and the forgetting curve takes its toll.

πŸ“š

The forgetting curve

Without reinforcement, memory fades. Without a Cue paired with the practice, sleep does not have a specific signal to reinforce.

⏰

Time is the bottleneck

Between work, life, and study, there is not enough time to keep reviewing the same words manually.

😴

Sleep is part of the work

Memory consolidates during sleep. TMR gives that process a Cue to reinforce.

How the TMR loop works

Targeted Memory Reactivation is a sleep neuroscience technique. A Cue paired with an activity while awake, replayed during sleep, can strengthen the associated memory.

Awake. Run a Session.

Your vocab review with the Item's Cue playing periodically in the background.

Sleep. Run a Sleep Session.

Pick Nap or Tonight. The Cue plays at appropriate sleep stages, reactivating the pairing.

Loop. Repeat.

One Item can have many Sessions and Sleep Sessions. The Cue stays tied to the Item.

TMR for a vocab Item

1Awake exposure

The Cue plays in the background while you study 'mariposa = butterfly'.

2Sleep Session

Pick Nap or Tonight. Set bedtime and wake time. Choose Cue plays or accept the recommended number.

3Cue replays

The same Cue plays at appropriate sleep stages, reactivating the pairing with 'mariposa'.

4Loop

Repeat across many Sessions and Sleep Sessions. The Cue stays tied to the Item.

What can you reinforce?

Anything you can run a Session around. TMR research has covered vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation tasks.

Vocabulary

New words, phrases, and expressions. Create an Item per vocab set and pair it with one Cue.

Grammar patterns

Verb conjugations, sentence structures, and grammatical rules you are drilling.

Conversation phrases

Common phrases, idioms, and expressions you are working into your speech.

Pronunciation

Pair a Cue with pronunciation practice during your awake Session.

Early language-learner testers

"Plateaued at intermediate Spanish for years. Set up an Item with one Cue, ran Sessions during my daily review, and ran Sleep Sessions at night. My morning recall on the cued words feels noticeably sharper."

Alex T.

Spanish learner

"Japanese kanji is the hard part for me. I create Items for each set, pair them with a Cue, and reinforce with Sleep Sessions. The routine itself is doing most of the work."

Michelle L.

Japanese learner

"I keep one Item per topic. One Cue each. Run a Session while I review, run a Sleep Session at night. Simple and repeatable."

David R.

French learner

Frequently asked questions

Which languages does SomniCue work with?

You create the Items. SomniCue is language-agnostic. Pair a Cue with your vocab practice in Spanish, French, Japanese, Mandarin, German, or any language.

Is this the same as playing language podcasts while sleeping?

No. The brain tunes out continuous audio during sleep. TMR uses a brief Cue that was paired with the vocab practice while awake. The Cue plays during sleep to reactivate that pairing. It does not deliver new content.

How many Items should I keep active?

Quality over quantity. A few Items, each with one clear Cue, is more useful than many overlapping Items. One Item can have many Sessions and Sleep Sessions over time.

Can I use this with Duolingo or other apps?

Yes. SomniCue runs alongside your existing tools. Learn the words with Duolingo, Babbel, or a tutor during the day. Run a SomniCue Session in the background while you practice. Run a Sleep Session at night.

How long until I see results?

Most users build a habit over a couple of weeks of consistent use. TMR supports the practice you are already doing. You still run the awake Session.
